Disney historical framework
The licensing deal between Sawyer’s and Walt Disney Productions in 1951 was a turning point in the history of 3-D media. View-Master thus became the first mass-market 3-D consumer platform to distribute content officially approved by Disney, long before the digital era.
The Model E era (1955–1959) is particularly relevant for Disney collectors because:
It falls within the earliest phase of commercial Disney 3-D storytelling.
The reels were made with real Kodachrome film transparencies, often based on original animation stills.
Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck were the first Disney characters to be released as part of 3-D series.
Full production took place in the United States by Sawyer’s before the acquisition by GAF (1966).
Especially Donald Duck reels from the 1950s are highly valued because they often contain 3-D-specific scenes that were not sold as traditional prints or postcards, but were exclusively available through the View-Master 3-D experience.
