Customs duties and taxes on alcohol became the state’s most important source of revenue from the mid-17th century. The amount of “proof” alcohol was taxed. To do this, the barrel size, barrel shape, barrel contents, and alcohol strength had to be determined. Around 1750: introduction of the 4th Tongue by manufacturer Edward Roberts (c. 1749–1776) with a linear slider and a double-log scale.
