David Beliën studied at the art academy in Tilburg. Three years after graduating, he decided to further explore his fascination with glass and began his studies at the glass school in Železný Brod and Nový Bor in the Czech Republic. Since then he has worked and experimented in various glass studios around the world. Beliën is interested in both mastering old techniques and finding new applications for these techniques. Characteristic of Beliën's work is his use of clear basic forms in combination with textured or otherwise striking skin.
In this 2006 work, David Beliën explores the tension between transparency, mass, and light. The compact, sculptural form gives the object an almost stone-like presence, while the transparent zones open the interior and allow light to actively participate in the work.
Characteristic of Beliën is the meticulous layering of the glass and the refined finish: every intervention remains visible as a subtle layer in the skin of the material. The vase thus balances between a utilitarian object and an autonomous sculptural piece — hushed, yet lively in its interaction with the surrounding environment.
His work is collected and valued worldwide.
