Description from the seller

This is a woodcut from the series Vergeldingen by Frans Masereel, published by Pierre Vorms in Paris. In this series, Masereel responds to the political and social developments in Germany in the early 1930s. With his work, he delivers sharp criticism of the emerging Nazism. After the Nazis seized power in January 1933, his work was banned in Germany: prints were removed from museums and libraries, some works were shown at the exhibition Kulturbolschewistische Bilder in Mannheim, his German publisher Malik Verlag in Berlin was destroyed, and his book Bilder der Großstadt was added to the list of banned books.

In response, Masereel became actively involved in the anti-fascist movement in Paris. He joined the Association des Écrivains et Artistes Révolutionnaires (AEAR) and created various drawings for the International Relief Committee for the victims of Nazism.

Frans Laurent Wilhelmina Adolf Lodewijk Masereel (Blankenberge, July 30, 1889 – Avignon, January 3, 1972) was a Belgian graphic artist, woodcut artist, painter, and draftsman, and is considered one of the most important graphic artists of the twentieth century. In his woodcuts, he expressed his view on and resistance to human foolishness, social injustice, and political oppression. The writer Stefan Zweig succinctly summarized the significance of Masereel's oeuvre:
When everything would come to an end — all books, monuments, photographs, and reports — and only the woodcuts that Masereel created over ten years remained preserved, then only from them could we reconstruct our entire contemporary world.
