Description from the seller
Pierre Caille ceramic, Belgian artist for UCB
Born in Tournai, Hainaut, on January 11, 1911, and died in Linkebeek on October 24, 1996.
Pierre Caille studied sculpture at the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Tournai before enrolling at the École Nationale d’Architecture et des Arts Décoratifs de La Cambre in Brussels.
He is turning towards ceramics under the influence of Henry Van de Velde, who involved him in the 1937 Arts and Techniques exhibition in Paris.
He will in turn lead the La Cambre ceramics workshop from 1949 to 1976. For nearly forty years, he created or contributed to the ornamentation of numerous public and private monuments, winning numerous awards and distinctions in Belgium and abroad.
Beyond his profession as a ceramicist, he was interested in all techniques, also creating paintings, engravings, and jewelry. His first prints date back to the late sixties. Heir to a tradition of burlesque, mockery, and surrealist dreaminess, Pierre Caille alone illustrates the world of creative belgitude.
His iconographic universe, infused with dark humor at times, is full of colorful and grimacing characters and animals.
