A Western Asiatic bronze duck weight, sleeping with a suspension perforation, dating to the circa 2nd millennium BC, measuring 1.8 × 0.8 × 1.3 cm, provenance Ex S collection, London.
Description from the seller
A Western Asiatic trade weight cast from bronze. The weight has been modelled in the stylised shape of a duck, portrayed sleeping with its head tucked towards its body. The base has been engraved with a linear design, perhaps suggesting seal-like use. Perforation for suspension under the neck of the duck. The surface is covered with patination, alongside minor scratches and wear.
Known as the ‘sleeping duck’, this shape is amongst the most popular for Near Eastern weights. It was commonly used in Mesopotamia during the Early Babylonian period as a weight system and was introduced into Anatolia by an Assyrian merchant. A great number of duck weights have been found throughout the Near East and in Anatolian sites.
Measurements (Circa): L 1.8cm x W 0.8cm x H 1.3cm
Provenance: Ex S collection, London, UK, deceased; formed 1970s-1990s.
