Hereke, a coastal town near Istanbul, has been a unique center for weaving art since 1843. Originally made for the aristocracy of the Ottoman Empire, Hereke carpets were offered as gifts to heads of state and royal palaces. Today they are sought-after collector's items and represent the pinnacle of Turkish weaving tradition. The carpets are double knotted using the Turkish knot and are made of either silk or a combination of wool and cotton. The rugs' designs are inspired by traditional Turkish and Persian motifs and include detailed depictions of flowers, birds, prayer niches and the tree of life. The color palette of Hereke carpets is wide and harmonious, with various shades of ivory, dark blue, red, yellow and green. The quality and beauty of these rugs have cemented their reputation as some of the finest silk rugs in the world.
