Maurice Mareels (1893-1976)

Maurice Mareels, born in Saint-Gilles on February 9, 1893, and died on October 14, 1976, in Uccle, was a Belgian painter.

Biography
Maurice (Pierre) Mareels was born at his parents' home (Adolphe Mareels and Jeanne Catherine Pletinckx), 19 Rue Blanche in Saint-Gilles.

He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels from 1911 to 1914 and from 1918 to 1919. He was a pupil of Herman Richir. Later he became a professor of drawing at the Academy of Decorative Arts in Ixelles.

He painted landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. His landscapes are located mainly in the Campine (notably in Genk) and in Brittany.

In 1913, he served as a militiaman in the 9th Line Infantry Regiment, known as the University Company. This gave him the opportunity to continue his studies.

On 22 October 1914, Maurice Mareels was wounded during the Battle of the Yser. For the rest of the war he was assigned to administrative duties within the army in Calais. At that time he created a few paintings depicting scenes from the Battle of the Yser in October 1914. Maurice Mareels published in 1970 a work Les carnets d'un fantassin de 1914, in which he recounts his military episode starting from 1 August 1914. He produced one of the 12 engravings for the album Autour de Bruxelles (1941).
