Deangle Mask - Dan - Côte d'Ivoire
This mask, with its entirely synthetic forms, is developed in two concave V-shaped planes, which converge in a straight horizontal line above the eyes. The upper plane contains the forehead, split vertically along its entire height by a scarification formed by overlapping lines in the shape of an inverted V, topped along its entire length by a semicircular cloth cap filled with sewn cowrie shells. The lower plane contains the elongated eyes, practically closed in an almond shape, the nose, and the mouth, all of which are simple, symmetrical, forceful, and voluminous. The whole gives the impression of cubism.
