Set of 2 antique opera glasses from Germany (Belle Époque), ca. 1900–1910, with brass frames and leather coverings, one black with leather and one white with early plastic celluloid imitation, both tested and functional.
Description from the seller
Set of 2 antique opera glasses – circa 1900 – ivory imitation (celluloid) & leather
A charming set of two antique opera glasses (theater glasses) from the turn of the century (ca. 1890–1910). An ideal collection for collectors or as decorative objects.
1
Black opera glass (leather)
Body with leather cover, frame made of blackened metal/messing.
Condition: Beautiful original condition with authentic patina. The lenses are dusty for their age but well preserved. The optics are functional, and the central drive can be moved.
2.
White opera glass (ivory imitation)
The housing is made of an early plastic, most likely celluloid (Ivorine), which was used at the time as a high-quality ivory imitation. The frame is made of brass.
Condition: Age-appropriate signs of use. Important note: The material shows the typical tension cracks and fractures associated with Celluloid, due to its high age and material stress (see detailed photos). The lenses are dusty consistent with their age but well preserved. The optics are functional, and the central drive can be moved.
An authentic antique from the golden age of opera houses, period: Historicism / Belle Époque.
This set is a prime example of German quality craftsmanship at the turn of the century, combining technical precision with the elegant design of Historicism.
The opera glasses show signs of use and natural aging patina, which emphasize their historical character. (see photos)
