Icon - Pentecost - Wood

A very old and rare Orthodox icon that depicts the Descent of the Holy Spirit (Сошествие Святого Духа на Апостолов) on the Apostles, a biblical event celebrated at Pentecost. It is a two-sided icon.
The text in the image Duhului SANT is Romanian and means Holy Spirit.

Hand-painted on wood, very detailed and masterful.

Dimensions: 35 x 27.5 x 2 cm

The depiction shows the apostles and Mary gathered in a room (the Upper Room), with tongues of fire appearing above their heads. The tongues of fire symbolize being filled with the Holy Spirit and the ability to speak in different languages to proclaim the Gospel.
This event is regarded as the founding of the Church and the beginning of its mission in the world.
This icon holds in Orthodox iconography a deep and layered significance that goes beyond the mere narration of the biblical event. It is regarded as the icon of the Church itself.

This is a processional icon. Such icons are painted on both sides so they can be seen by all worshippers during solemn processions in church or outdoors. Each side typically depicts a different saint or a different biblical event.
The depiction on the back, which bears military attributes such as armor and a red cloak and holds branches, is Saint Procopius of Scythopolis.
