Mid-century modern coffee table by Maison Jansen, France, 1970s, with a wooden structure, glass top and an aged brass frame, measuring 102 cm wide, 61 cm deep and 46 cm high.
Description from the seller
Coffee table "Map / World globe", Maison Jansen, 1970 – France
Magnificent coffee table or side table made by Maison Jansen in the 1970s, ornamented with a map that draws powerful attention. This coffee table features a simple wooden structure, with straight lines and a square profile. The top, in glass, has an aged gilded brass frame that protects it and unites it with the structure. It is a coffee table that follows the campaign style, so characteristic in British colonial art and adopted on many occasions by Maison Jansen.
The map is titled “A new and correct map of the world according to the newest discoveries and from the most exact observations, by Herman Moll, geographer.” It is a map created by Herman Moll in the eighteenth century, part of a collection of about thirty maps. These maps are distinguished by their elaborate cartouche and images. As with many of his works, Moll used these maps to publicize and support British policy and its regional rights around the world: he labeled the Atlantic Ocean as the “Sea of the British Empire.” In a cartouche in the lower area, the text appears: “To His most sacred majesty George, by the Grace of God king of Great Britain, France & Ireland, defender of the faith.”
It is, therefore, a table of extraordinary quality and finish, which can be used as a games table, as a coffee table, or as an auxiliary table for any corner.
The prestigious Parisian brand Maison Jansen is one of the leading interior design firms. It was founded by Jean-Henri Jansen in 1880, a Dutchman settled in Paris, and it soon established itself in premises just a few meters from the Bastille. It stood out especially for restoration and its work in cabinetmaking, with the best artisans of its time. From its beginnings, its aim was to combine traditional furniture with influences from new trends, including Anglo-Japanese style, chinoiseries, the Arts and Crafts movement, and Turkish style. It grew, opening workshops and shops around the world, and decorated the residences of notable figures such as the Kennedys, the Dukes of Windsor, or Coco Chanel.
