Description from the seller
Copper painting – Saint bishop with angel – 1800
Oil on copper plate, with an antique, richly carved frame.
This small oil on copper depicts a saint bishop — identifiable by the mitre, the pastoral staff, and the gesture of blessing — accompanied by an angel holding the staff. The work is typical of devotional painting from the late 17th century: a fresh palette, gilded highlights on liturgical vestments, gentle modeling of the face, and a presence of a misty background.
The saint wears a pectoral adorned with a red stone, crafted with precision.
In the left hand, a closed book, a common attribute of bishops who are doctors. The iconography remains intentionally simple; it is suitable for a private oratory or a domestic chapel.
Technique
Oil on copper plate (typical thickness and back oxidation, with old handwritten numbering).
Very good overall condition: minimal signs of use, a few superficial micro-cracks, no structural gaps.
Pigments and varnishes conforming to an 18th-century execution.
Cadre
Beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame, 19th century, with a highly ornate Rocaille decoration: scrolls, flowers, shells, deep reliefs. Slightly worn gilding, but coherent and decorative.
The display is perfectly mounted in this frame, ready to be exhibited.
Dimensions
Copper plaque (view): 15.5 × 11.5 cm
Frame dimensions: 30 x 27.5 cm
Provenance
Old private collection (old numbering on the reverse: no. 4065).
State
Very good overall condition for its age. No visible restorations. Solid frame.
