Ancient Greece loutrophoros with TL test - 55 cm

Superb and huge Greek terracotta loutrophoros from the 3rd century BC, Canosan, with riders and fight scenes. Small repairs in the neck. With TL Test. Acquired from a Belgium private collection T.F, 80's. -The piece includes an authenticity certificate. This Canosan Loutrophoros is an exceptional piece of Greek pottery from the 3rd century BC, associated with the Canosan subculture in the Italian region of Apulia. This type of vessel, characterised by its slender, elongated shape, with a high neck and flared base, was traditionally used in funeral and wedding rituals, suggesting its symbolic function in the rites of passage of Greek society. The vessel, made of polychrome pottery, retains traces of polychromie, a distinctive feature of Canosan pottery, known for its vibrant decorations combining colours such as red, blue and yellow on a light background. The scene depicted on its surface is a battle scene, featuring two warriors armed with round shields and capes, in a dynamic composition that emphasises the movement and tension of the confrontation. Above them, at the top of the vase, is a winged horse, possibly a representation of Pegasus, suggesting a connection with heroic myths or war scenes with divine implications. This loutrophoros has undergone thermoluminescence testing, which certifies its age and authenticity. It is in good condition, allowing us to appreciate the pictorial details that have survived the passage of time. Canosan potteries, although inspired by the Greek tradition, is distinguished by its unique decorative style within the Hellenistic world, with greater chromatic experimentation and a predilection for narrative scenes.
