Emerald is a dark to light green variety of the silicate mineral beryl with the chemical composition Al2Be3[Si6O18]. The color of emerald, which ranges from a dark blue-green to a light yellow-green, is caused by minor foreign inclusions of chromium (Cr3+) and vanadium ions (V3+).
Like pure mineral beryl, emerald crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system and typically develops six-sided, prismatic to columnar crystals with a glass-like luster on the surfaces. Its Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 is comparable to that of beryl.
