Decorative ornament - Spain - Case - 30 cm

Decorative ornament representing a reliquary case, made of stuccoed and polychromed wood, possibly dated to the eighteenth century. The piece shows a stylized interpretation of the Eucharistic monstrance, with the central disk-shaped host bearing an inscribed cross, surrounded by rays that symbolize the divine irradiation of the Blessed Sacrament. The base, either truncated-cone shaped or pedestal-like, reinforces its liturgical character, although in this case it is a more symbolic pictorial or sculptural representation rather than a functional one.

The plastering on wood — a technique that consists of applying a coat of plaster or paste and then painting it — yields a smooth surface suitable for polychromy, which in this piece is preserved with wear, showing crackling, flaking, and patina that attest to its age. The background in subdued green tones and the gold applied with tempera or gold leaf suggest artisanal manufacture, probably intended for domestic devotional use or as a decorative element in minor chapels.

Although it is not a liturgical reliquary in the strict sense, this figure embodies the essential iconography of Eucharistic worship, and can be linked to the Baroque tradition of visual exaltation of the sacrament. Its value lies both in its symbolic significance and in the workmanship and condition of preservation, which reinforce its authenticity as an object from its era.
