Antique brass magnifying loupe with a domed glass lens, dating to the 19th century (possibly late 18th/early 19th), total length 8.7 cm, lens diameter 4.5 cm, weight 4.5 g; in good overall condition and functional.
Description from the seller
Decorated antique magnifying glass – patinated brass – antique glass – 19th century
Beautiful antique brass magnifying glass with a patinated finish, featuring a convex lens made of old glass, of pre-industrial manufacture.
The circular mount is adorned with stylized floral motifs, evoking lilies, integrated into a repetitive decorative frieze. This type of decoration is characteristic of old utilitarian and decorative objects, made in a spirit that is both functional and ornamental.
The triangular handle, also decorated, is wrapped with a twisted metal wire, a fabrication detail typical of high-quality antique magnifying glasses and attesting to careful artisanal workmanship. The piece as a whole shows an even antique patina, preserved in its original condition.
Lens
The lens is made of antique convex glass, presenting:
visible micro-scratches and signs of wear, in keeping with its age,
• a very slight play in its setting, common on this type of antique object.
The lens is in place, undamaged—not cracked or chipped—and remains functional.
Dating (estimated)
In light of the stylistic and technical elements (brass work, engravings, antique glass, twisted assembly), this magnifying glass can be dated to the 19th century, possibly late 18th / early 19th century.
Dimensions
• Total length: approx. 8.7 cm
• Diameter of the lens: approx. 4.5 cm
State
• Good overall condition for an antique item
• Visible signs of use
• Clearly legible engravings
Old patina preserved
A collectible, decorative and utilitarian object, typical of 19th-century office accessories and cabinets of curiosities.
