French architect’s table from the Louis XVI period, circa 1790–1800, in mahogany with mahogany veneer and gilt bronze mounts, a retractable and tilting writing surface with green tooled leather, and dimensions 76 cm high, 87 cm wide, 51 cm deep.
Description from the seller
French Louis XVI architect's desk, unique of its kind, with a rectangular profile, in mahogany and mahogany veneer, known as "Table à la Tronchin" (circa 1790-1800). The work surface, clad in tooled green leather and actuated by a rack-and-pinion mechanism, rises and expands to form a removable and tilting desk, adjustable via hidden brass mechanical supports in the front legs.
This allows standing or seated work.
The frieze opens to reveal a drawer with a work surface clad in green tooled leather and divided into compartments, possibly for papers. The side features divided compartments, one of which includes a metallic inkwell.
The sides of the desk have removable leaves clad in green tooled leather, to match the rest of the main surface, originally used as candle holders.
It rests on four ornamental cylindrical legs that terminate in mounts or sabot de bronze doré. With key
