Willem Coenraad Brouwer was born on 19 October 1877 in Leiden. In 1906 he received a gold medal at the Triennale in Milan. He used various traditional decoration techniques – sgraffito, ringeloren, grooved ornamentation and intarsia or inlay work – in a deliberately sober and simple style, in which the influence of Eastern decorative art is also recognizable. Brouwer designed and produced from around 1907 also architectural ceramic sculpture. In 1910 he received the Grand Prix at the World Exhibition in Brussels.
