Description from the seller
Devotional Medallion "Grand Tour" in Silver Filigree and Vermeil – 19th Century
A rare and exceptional circular Medallion, a superb example of refined goldsmithing from the second half of the 19th century. The work situates itself within the elite production tied to the Grand Tour, the formative journey undertaken by European aristocracy, during which objects were commissioned to combine local artisanal mastery with the allure of the splendors of Christian and Classical Rome.
The piece is crowned by a two-sided medallion in vermeil (gilded silver), faithfully reproducing the iconography of the Plumbeae Bullae of the Apostolic Chancellery, used by the Popes to seal the most solemn documents:
* Obverse: The noble profile of Saint Paul the Apostle (S. PAVLVS APO ST), iconographically rendered with the traditional flowing beard and high forehead, a symbol of theological wisdom.
* Verse: The profile of Saint Peter the Apostle (PETRVS A), the Prince of the Apostles, characterized by the typical hairstyle and curly beard.
The Art of Filigree
The iconic heart is embraced by a monumental mount in silver filigree. The craftsmanship, of extreme refinement, features a radiating structure composed of eight scroll elements, fashioned from ultra-fine silver wires woven by hand (openwork).
The alternation between the natural patina of silver and the manually applied gold spheres gives the object a three-dimensionality and a shine typical of Roman goldsmithing of the very highest caliber (the Castellani school or related).
* Type: Collectible medallion (already part of a ceremonial display or intended for noble pilgrims).
* Era: Approximately 1860–1880 (Full Grand Tour period / Historicism).
* Material: Solid silver (tested) and gold finishes (vermeil).
This medallion is not a simple object of devotion, but a symbol of status and culture. The choice to reproduce the papal seal in such an elaborate frame makes it a highly sought-after collectible, representative of an era in which Italian craftsmanship was the absolute excellence for international travelers.
A highly valuable addition for collectors of sacred art, papal numismatics, or antique silver jewelry.
