Two-piece ensemble in Napoléon III style, made of brass, comprising a central portico clock and two matching cassolettes, with an 8-day mechanical movement and bell strike for hours and halves, manufactured in France circa 1880–1920, in good condition and not in working order.
Description from the seller
For sale, a magnificent three-piece French fireplace set, dating from the second half of the 19th century (c. 1860-1880). This ensemble, in the Napoleonic III style, combines classical and imperial elements in a sumptuous and richly ornamented design, crafted in high-quality gilded bronze (ormolu).
The Set:
The garniture comprises a central portico clock and two matching cassolettes (decorative urns). The three pieces rest on a wooden base upholstered in a distinctive pinkish-red velvet, topped with a pink looped fringe.
Artistic Details:
• Central Clock: The clock case is a complex bronze structure. The dial is flanked by two imperial eagles with their wings spread. At the top, two cherubs (putti) hold an overflowing urn of fruit and flowers, a classic symbol of abundance. The base of the clock features intricate lattice work and a central relief medallion that depicts musical trophies (a lyre, a music sheet, a horn) and floral motifs.
Side Cassolettes: Two smaller matching urns, decorated with baskets full of fruit and flowers, that perfectly complement the centerpiece.
Sphere and Mechanism:
• Dial: Metallic and golden, it features black Roman numerals (I–XII) and an elaborate central engraving with sunray and floral motifs. The hands are made of dark metal, with an ornate design. It has two keyholes for winding.
• Movement: It is a French movement from Paris ("Pendule de Paris"), round, 8-day. It features a Brocot-type escape visible on the back. The mechanism is stamped with serial number 149786. Includes a bell-striking system for hours and quarters (the hammer is visible). No maker's marks (such as Japy Frères or Marti) are visible on the back plate that is visible, although they could be under the bell.
Condition status
Bronze: In good overall condition, retaining much of its original gilding with a natural patina and dust accumulation in the cracks due to age, which enhances its antique character. No obvious cracks observed.
• Velvet base: The upholstery shows signs of wear, discoloration, and some stains consistent with its age. The trim shows some fraying in certain areas.
• Mechanism: The mechanism appears complete but has not been tested recently. It is sold as a decorative item; it may require inspection by a professional watchmaker.
