Description from the seller

Stunning ceremonial Ngulu sickle (Democratic Republic of the Congo), finely crafted in wrought iron with a decorated wooden handle and wrapped in metal.
The blade features an elegant curved shape with side cutouts and linear incisions that give it an aesthetic and symbolic appearance. These weapons were not intended for combat but served as badges of prestige and dowry objects in marriage exchanges, as well as currencies of value.
The handle is carved and decorated with relief motifs in the shape of nodules, evoking strength and fertility, all covered with a beautiful antique patina that enhances its authenticity.
The Ngula sickles are among the most remarkable examples of African ritual weapons, combining formal power and symbolic function.

Origin: Democratic Republic of the Congo
20th century
Wrought iron material, wood cladding, in metal

Good condition, vintage with signs of wear and oxidation consistent with its age and authenticity.
Old provenance from a private European collection.
