Original Thonet beechwood chair from Austria, circa 1890–1920, in Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style, 79 cm high, 60 cm wide, 57 cm deep, seat about 48 cm in diameter, weight 4.5 kg, in good used condition with minor signs of aging and stains, original seat included (replaced) and a legible brand stamp on the underside.
Description from the seller
Extremely beautiful original Thonet office chair (perhaps No. 21). The well-known brand is still clearly legible on a stamp at the bottom (see photos). The chair is 79 cm high, the width is 60 cm (armrest to armrest) and the depth is 57 cm (from backrest to front). The diameter of the seat is about 48 cm and the weight is 4.5 kg.
The chair still has a distinct Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) design, with the S-shaped curves of the wood (beech wood), but you could also call it Art Deco. This chair was probably produced between 1890 and 1910.
Michael Thonet is regarded as the first and most important furniture designer. He was also the first to perfect steam-bending of wood to such an extent that it could be applied in industrial furniture production. Also in this chair the steam-bent elements are clearly visible. This gave the Thonet chair stability. Michael Thonet began producing this kind of chairs at an industrial level, in the mid-19th century. It is also remarkable how stable this chair remains despite being over 100 years old!
The chair still looks good for a chair that is more than 100 years old. It is still 100% stable. The signs of use are logical signs of use. All original joining materials are still present. The original seat is also present. It has been replaced by another one, but it is still present (see photos) and is included. This old seat, however, must be restored in order to be usable again. The original impressions in the wood are still clearly visible here (see photos). The original seat is supplied separately.
This special chair is not only a jewel in every interior, but also still a comfortable and functional piece of furniture! Moreover, it is certainly a conversation piece!!
The chair will be carefully packed and shipped insured.
