Beautifully carved Chokwe ritual drum Mukupela Chokwe is the largest ethnic group in eastern Angola. Their sculptors were the most famous of the region and have influenced the art of many neighboring tribes. These drums were made for the chiefs, for special rituals. The inauguration of a royal drum like this one here, according to some sources it was so important that it often called for human and animal sacrifice - just as did the occasion of the royal funeral or succession. Royal drums have been adorned with geometrical designs and masks and ring type small handles. Absolutely unique and beautifully preserved... Perfect for a true collectionist who can appreciate the history, the craftsmanship and culture of this exceptional drum. Drum description: Dark red stained wood and brown animal skins for the drum membranes. Carved drum heads decorated with labirybth and lined square designs. Typical for Chokwe ritual drums there are present depictions of faces carved on both sides. 4 ring shaped "handles" with bow and arrow designs. Drum membranes are intact (not pierced), despite some scratches and marks on the skins. Still very well tensed with metal nails. Vibrating well when played. Please see photographs. Wood carvings have few small imperfections, however nothing significant. Please see close ups on the photograps.
