Italian 800 silver candlestick from Piemonte, dating to the 1950s, in Renaissance-inspired antique style, measuring 19.5 × 15 × 10 cm and weighing 236 g, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Elegant bugia in solid 800 silver, Italian production dating back to the 1950s/1960s, a period when many silversmith workshops reinterpret the classical language with sober taste and outstanding craftsmanship.
The object features a shaped base with a dynamic, undulating profile, divided into sectors by fluid ribs that recall Renaissance and Baroque antecedents. The surface is finished with a fine, uniform hand-applied hammering, which creates a refined contrast with the smooth, glossy relief elements.
The decoration is enriched with applied and chased botanical motifs, probably stylized leaves, arranged in a balanced way along the rim of the base. The central shaft, turned and slightly flared, features vertical grooves that guide the eye toward the upper candle holder, flared and well-proportioned.
A distinctive and highly prized feature is the side handle in the shape of a Renaissance dolphin, cast and finished by chasing: the sinuous body is rendered with notable skill, with scales carved one by one, an expressive head and an elegantly curled tail. The dolphin, a symbol of harmony, protection, and classicism, gives the object a strong decorative and cultured character.
The silver is hefty, as confirmed by its substantial weight of 236 grams despite its compact size, an indication of quality, non-industrial production; it bears a natural patina consistent with the era, which enhances the form and the details of the craftsmanship.
An elegant and decorative object, ideal for collectors of Italian silver from the twentieth century or as a piece with a strong personality in a classical or eclectic setting.
P.S.: the candlestick was made by a company from the province of Alessandria, as can be seen from the mark, namely L.M.A. of GUERCI & C., active from 1935 to 1971, the year of its closure.
