A bronze statue of the Hindu god Shiva.
Probably Nepal, circa 1960–1970.
Shiva is one of the principal gods in Hinduism and is often regarded as the supreme god by the Shaivite sect.
He embodies conflicting qualities, such as destruction and, at the same time, the creation of new life.
In this seated meditation pose (Yogeshwar), he performs with his right hand the abhaya mudra, a gesture of reassurance and protection.
The lion's head or tiger head on the base symbolizes his victory over the demon that had taken the form of a tiger.
It is about 19.5 cm tall, with a weight of about 1,638 grams.
