When one of the world's largest ships reaches the end of its useful life, it often ends up at Alang, India. The ships run aground at high tide and are then slowly dismantled with torches and crowbars. The steel extracted from the ships helps fuel the construction industry in these developing countries. Picture 5 shows a satellite image of Alang Beach in March 2017. The images show old ships disappearing, new ones arriving, and the pace of deconstruction.
