Pair of antique brass firedogs in antique style from Europe, dating to c. 1910–1920; each measures 16.5 cm high, 15 cm wide, 11 cm deep, with a total weight of 1.4 kg, in good condition with signs of aging and patina.
Description from the seller
A couple of antique fire dogs (also called firedogs), made of solid brass, intended for use in a fireplace.
These objects combine a practical function with a decorative character, as is customary with classic fireplace accessories.
The fire dogs are placed in pairs to lift the firewood slightly off the hearth floor.
This improves airflow under the wood, resulting in more efficient combustion and less smoke. The raised ends with decorative end knobs also prevent burning logs from rolling out of the fireplace.
This set features a classical design with twisted shafts and decorative end caps, characteristic of 19th-century and early-20th-century fireplace accessories.
Such brass fire dogs were often used in representative interiors in the past and were seen as a subtle status symbol.
The underside of both hearth blocks is marked with impressed stamps, visible on the base plates (see photos).
Such markings are common on hand-made brass fireplace accessories from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Condition
Good antique condition, suitable for its age and use.
Clear scorching and oxidation visible on the underside and inner surface, caused by prolonged exposure to heat.
Patina, discoloration and signs of wear present.
No broken parts or missing components.
