Northern Netherlands – Dutch Republic (1581–1795)
West Friesland, Enkhuizen, 1677 – a very rare year

Silver ship’s shilling, struck at the chartered mint of Enkhuizen under mintmaster David Hagenet.

Specifications
• Metal: silver
• Weight: 3.28 grams
• Cross-section: 25 mm

Front side

God is our strength and our hope.
(God is our strength and our hope)

Reverse side
Crowned feudal coat of arms of West Friesland, flanked by the value indication 6 – S. Inscription:
MO:NO:ORDIN • West Frisia 1678

Rarity:
Very rare year; this type appears only sporadically in public auctions.

Historical background:
Although West Frisia formally formed part of the County of Holland, the lordship retained a high degree of autonomy, including its own coinage. From 1587 the cities of Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Medemblik agreed to perform the minting jointly and in rotation, an arrangement that lasted until 1796. The ship-money chests from this period are tangible witnesses of this special position within the Republic.

Struck at the Westfriese Mint in Enkhuizen, operated by the Amsterdam jeweler Dirck Bosch. The coin dies were cut by the renowned Amsterdam die-engraver Christoffel Adolphi, known for his high quality and aesthetically pleasing die work.
