Description from the seller

A very exceptional and heavily crafted metal religious casket, richly decorated with finely cast relief scenes. Encircling the casket are narratively depicted scenes with standing and kneeling figures in robes, clearly inspired by Christian iconography. The imagery continues onto the sides and the lid, giving the object a strong narrative and monumental character.

The lid depicts several figures beneath Gothic arches, framed by floral motifs. The detailing is remarkably sharp and attests to high-quality casting. The warm patina enhances the relief and gives the box an authentic, restrained appearance. The interior is also metal and was once lined with red velvet, showing signs of age and use, in keeping with its age.

The little box sits on four small feet and feels solid and heavy. Possibly originally used as a devotional box, a reliquary box, or for storing valuable personal items. A beautiful object for collectors of religious art, symbolism, or historical metal objects.

A rare and decorative piece that appeals both in terms of substance and aesthetics.
