Edwardian single-flame candlestick in sterling silver (.925), Chester 1904, weighing 973 g, with a ribbed shaft and a stepped, ornamented foot, made in the United Kingdom by Henry Luke (HL) and designed for a weighted base.
Description from the seller
Edwardian Sterling Silver Candelabrum – Chester 1904 – Neoclassical Design
Description: An elegant, single-flame candle holder made of solid sterling silver is for sale. The holder captivates with its timeless neoclassical design (also called "Adam Style") featuring a fluted shaft and a stepped, round foot with a decorative gadrooned pattern.
Material: Sterling silver (fineness .925)
Origin: Chester, United Kingdom
Year of manufacture: 1904 (Edwardian era)
Master mark: "H.L" (to be attributed to the silversmith Henry Luke, who was active in Birmingham around the turn of the century and had his pieces frequently assayed in Chester).
Construction: The candlestick is weighted in the base (English: “weighted” or “filled”), in order to ensure high stability. This was standard for tall silver candlesticks of this period.
Condition: Good, authentic condition with a nice patina of age. The silver shows no deep scratches or major dents.
Weight: 973 g
Gemini's assessment: I bought the candelabrum about 20 years ago for 300 GBP from a dealer in the UK.
Analysis of the punches (IMG_0454)
The stamps on the edge of the foot provide precise information about age and origin:
Master brand (HL): Henry Luke.
Lion passant (Walking Lion): The English hallmark for sterling silver (.925).
Three ears of wheat with a sword: the city emblem of the Assay Office in Chester.
Lowercase “d”: the year letter for 1904. The shield form (flat on top, pointed at the bottom) confirms this year exactly.
