Jacob Abels was a pupil of Jan van Ravenswaay. In 1826 he undertook a study trip to Germany, after which he settled in The Hague. Initially he mainly painted summer landscapes. Later he distinguished himself by painting river, city, and seaside views, often by moonlight. His landscape paintings are considered part of Dutch Romanticism.
There is a work by Abels on display at the Teylers Museum in Haarlem.
