Description from the seller
Old Russian multi-panel icon (seven-panel)
A multi-figured icon (the so-called 'pisana'), typical of the Old Believer tradition and the Northern Russian tradition.
At the top an inscription: “Кazanская Пресвятая Богородица. Сретение Господне. Святитель Николай Чудотворец”, i.e.: • Kazan Icon of the Mother of God • The Presentation of the Lord (Meeting of the Lord – Sretenie) • Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker
The upper band consists of three main presentations:
1. On the left – Our Lady of Kazan,
2. In the middle – The Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Simeon holds the Child)
3. On the right – Santa Claus.
The central strip is a row of holy intercessors—likely patrons of the home and family, or especially venerated within a given community. It draws attention to the presence of the Archangel (the central figure with wings), several martyrs, and holy bishops (a composition typical of “prayer” icons, protective).
Lower register: in the center Saint George fighting a dragon – a classic motif of the triumph of good over evil, very popular in protective icons. On the sides the saints stand again.
The overall arrangement suggests that it is a home icon with a protective and intercessory function.
Tempera painting on board, gilding in the background (today heavily patinated), a raw, folk style.
Dating: late 18th, early 19th century.
Condition: pronounced cracks, gilding wear, in places losses of the paint layer, but the composition is legible and preserved in its entirety.
Dimensions: 27 x 22 x 2.8 cm
An object preserved in an authentic state, with visible signs of time. Real photo.
