1800s, Thomas & Co, England - Tankard (2) - Pewter, Glass

A fantastic pair of English pewter tankards from the mid to late 1800s, made in the classic glass-bottom design. Both tankards are made in heavy pewter with thick, clear glass bases, a design traditionally intended to allow a drinker to see the hand of anyone approaching while their face was obscured by the mug (and to ensure the beer was clear and not cloudy). One tankard is engraved on the front with a crowned monogram (MLE or similar), while the other features a lion standing on a cap of maintenance, a well-known British heraldic motif often associated with private estates, institutions, or officer mess use. The tankard with hallmarks is stamped with British pewter pseudo-hallmarks, including a lion rampant, a sword, the number 5, and the maker’s mark T & C, attributed to Thomas & Co., active in England during the mid to late 19th century (circa 1860–1890). These marks were commonly used on quality pewter to reflect traditional silver marking conventions. Both pieces show a rich, deep patina. There is general surface wear with small scratches and a few tiny dents, along with light watermarks and minor rust traces inside, all typical for 19th-century pewter. Nothing structural. The handles are strong and secure. The glass bottoms are intact with no chips, cracks, or damage, and both tankards feel solid and well-balanced. A highly decorative pair of Victorian pewter tankards with strong historical character, ideal for collectors of antique Britishpewter Dimensions (each tankard): Height: 16 cm Width incl. handle: 16.5 cm Base diameter: 12.5 cm Total weight (pair): 1,717 grams Please take a good look at the photos, which are an integral part of the description. This lot will be carefully packed, so it will get to its new owner exactly as it should.
