Description from the seller

Indian brass box, early 20th century.
Bella, usable and collectible pandan box. Skillfully crafted in solid brass, the box is fitted with a top handle for carrying, with a latch (the central pin is missing), and a hinged lid. These boxes were used to store betel leaves, lime, tobacco, and the areca nut. This blend of ingredients, if prepared and held in the mouth for long periods, is said to have a mild aphrodisiac effect for the user.
Betel chewing, or pan as it is called in northern India, has a long history in India and in many other parts of South Asia. It is especially appreciated after meals for its alkaline content, but it can be consumed at any time and has come to be associated with a relaxed and refined lifestyle.
Generally good vintage condition with the usual signs of wear and age.
Please review the photographic gallery carefully, as it is an integral part of the description, to avoid any unpleasant misunderstandings.
Careful packaging and shipment with tracking.

Seller's Story

For over 20 years, I have dedicated myself passionately to the search for and trading of special, rare, curious objects from any era. Every piece I select has something that captures my attention: it can be the shape, the story, the unusual... or simply that detail that makes it unique. I am always searching for objects that speak, that tell something to those who know how to listen. I choose them carefully, photograph them honestly, and describe them as accurately as possible. Selling on Catawiki to share this passion with those who, like me, love to surround themselves with things with a soul.
