Description from the seller

Triumph TR4A IRS Roadster 1966

• Engine and transmission overhauled
• Only 2,852 miles driven after engine and gearbox revision
Damage- and rust-free
• In the possession of the last owner for over 30 years
• Desired IRS implementation with independent suspension
• Beautiful color combination

HISTORY:

The Triumph TR4: a popular roadster as it should be: lightweight, nimble, and a pleasure to drive. Combined with a stunning Italian design. Italian design on an English car, you may wonder? Indeed: the design came from the hand of Michelotti, who has provided legendary designs for a variety of coachbuilders and brands such as Ferrari and Maserati.

The car was built in 1966 and delivered new in the United States, where the climate is favorable. The last American owner owned the Triumph in Monterey, California. In 1994 the car was imported to the Netherlands, after which it has always been in the possession of the same owner.

There is a lot of documentation with the car, including export documents, an original 'Owners Handbook', the latest MOT form from 2021 (after that an MOT was no longer mandatory due to the age of the car). In addition, a thick stack of beautiful books is present, including a parts catalog and a workshop manual.

Exterior

A sight to behold, certainly the example we offered, in a stunning color combination: British Racing Green (color code 75) with a beige leather interior. The paintwork was sprayed in the 1990s and is therefore not in perfect condition. Naturally the car shows signs of use, but the body has not been welded and this is a damage-free and a very solid car.

The chrome trim and the lighting are in good condition. The rubber components show signs of use. The black soft top is in good condition with no cracking. For a clear view, see our extensive photo report, including pictures of the underside of the car.

INTERIOR:

The interior is still in good condition with only minimal signs of use. The beige leather is free of cracks. The large, almost vertically mounted steering wheel and the elegant large gauges make the interior a pleasant place. The dashboard is beautifully finished with wood. The seats are adjustable. Furthermore, the interior features optional heating. The trunk space is neat as well and provides room for the spare wheel, a lug wrench, and a jack.

Technical

Only 2,852 miles (4,590 km) have both the engine and the gearbox rebuilt. The underside of the car is very solid and has withstood the test of time very well. At the rear are adjustable 'Spax' telescopic shock absorbers installed. At the front are 'KONI Classic' shock absorbers installed. New bushings have also been installed. The car starts, shifts, brakes and drives very well and is therefore ready for the next owner.

General

The TR4 is a sports car produced from 1961 through 1965 and is the successor to the TR3. Under the skin, the first series of the TR4 is largely the same as the TR3, but thanks to a longer wheelbase the TR4 offers more room. The larger doors accommodate downward-opening side windows, unlike the TR3. Visually, the TR4 differs from the TR3: a sturdy, large grille and clean lines. A distinctive feature is the bump on the hood, which houses the two carburetors. The TR4 was designed by the Italian designer Michelotti; his input ensured a wonderfully beautiful design, in the eyes of many the finest in the entire TR series from Triumph.

Because of the importance attached to the American market, relatively few examples were sold in Europe. The four-cylinder engine has been bored out to 2138 cc. Thanks to its sporty driving characteristics, a number of TR4s were used by the English police at the time. The TR4 was succeeded in 1965 by the TR4A IRS, where IRS stands for Independent Rear Suspension. This independent rear suspension provides more ride comfort and better handling, which today makes it a coveted model.

Furthermore, the austere metal TR4 dashboard was equipped with a finely crafted wooden panel, and the handbrake operation was moved to the transmission tunnel between the seats. Because the TR4 A IRS was produced only until 1967, the production total of 28,468 units can be considered relatively low. Precise steering, excellent road manners thanks to the well-balanced chassis, sportiness and suppleness make the TR4 a sporty and coveted touring car.
