Torito de Pucará, a hand-formed ceramic bull from Peru (Pucará region), dating ca. 1930–1940, with dimensions about 8 × 18 × 20 cm and beige, ochre, white and red-brown tones; in good used condition with minor aging marks.
Description from the seller
PERU | Ancient bull figure Torito de Pucará from Puno (1930s–40s)
This impressive Torito de Pucará originates from the Peruvian Andes and is among the most powerful symbols of South American folk art. The bull traditionally stands for protection, fertility, strength, and prosperity, and was often placed in pairs on rooftops to safeguard home and family.
The present piece is hand-formed, hollowed out, and fitted with a typical opening on the back. The earthy ochre, white, and reddish-brown tones, together with the restrained, graphic painting, indicate an early folk-art piece from the early 20th century—clearly before later tourist mass production. It is completely undamaged. Today's bulls are painted in garishly bright colors!
The surface bears authentic signs of aging, irregularities, and artisanal idiosyncrasies that underscore the object's original character and its aura. Not a modern souvenir, but a piece of lived cultural history.
