Description from the seller
HA Qi, also known as SADJI (1914–2005)
Sonian Forest
Oil on canvas, mounted on an original cardboard panel.
Signed at the bottom right in Chinese characters and Latin letters.
Titled on the reverse
Dimensions: about 51 × 41 cm
Description
This work by Sha Qi, known in Europe under the name Sadji, depicts a landscape of the Sonian Forest, rendered in a warm and autumnal palette. The artist deploys dense painterly material, applied in thick, energetic, and expressive brushstrokes, characteristic of his Belgian period.
The foliage vibrates thanks to a subtle layering of colored tones, ranging from deep greens to bright reds and luminous ochers, while the surface of the water delicately reflects these masses of vegetation. The composition, structured around a tree with sinewy branches, creates a harmonious balance and a controlled visual rhythm.
This painting perfectly illustrates the stylistic research characteristic of Sadji, namely the encounter between Eastern pictorial sensibility and Western techniques of oil painting. At once energetic and lyrical, the treatment of the landscape highlights the uniqueness of his work.
The canvas, marouflaged on its original cardboard support, bears two signatures — in Chinese and in the Latin alphabet — confirming the authenticity of the artist's hand. The title Forêt de Soignes, inscribed on the reverse, provides a geographic detail appreciated by collectors of Belgian landscapes.
Provenance
