Spanish birth stool in a brutalist vintage style, hand‑carved from solid wood (oak or beech) with a dark aged finish, dating to the 1960s–1970s, dimensions 75 cm high, 47 cm wide, seat height 36 cm, weight 3.7 g, in good used condition with minor signs of aging and spots.
Description from the seller
This stool is Spanish and was made in the 60s or 70s.
The style is Brutalism. It is often called a 'birth chair' or 'bar stool'.
The stool is an example of Spanish brutalism, a style that was popular in the mid-20th century, specifically the 1960s and 1970s. The style is characterized by the use of robust, unfinished materials and honest craftsmanship, with the 'woodiness of wood' visible.
The design is typically Spanish, and this stool was most likely brought to the Netherlands as a souvenir. This kind of stool reflects rural craftsmanship and Iberian tradition.
Historically, such low three-legged chairs served as birth stools, intended for the mother to sit low to the ground during labor. Today they are mainly used as decorative pieces, as a small stool, or as a plant stand.
The stool is hand-carved from solid wood, oak or ash, and it has a very dark, weathered finish. The legs are roughly worked and the seat has a low backrest with a carved motif.
The carving is simple; it resembles a traditional motif. It is characteristic of traditional Spanish handicraft. Although these motifs point to a Spanish origin, it is not possible to determine the exact region of origin within Spain. The chair is very sturdy, indeed: only the right front leg has been reinforced with screws.
