Description from the seller

A late 19th-century well hook with fine craftsmanship and large size. It has no welds; it is entirely wrought iron and pegged. It features 9 hand-forged anchors.

This tool, already existing in 1700, was used to recover buckets that accidentally fell into the well.
He had descended into the well by a rope, and they were trying to hook the bucket that had fallen accidentally. The scratches could be of various sizes, with more or fewer hooks/anchors.
