Description from the seller
Icon painted on a panel, of Greek-orthodox provenance, depicting Saint Constantine and Saint Athanasius, with Christ blessing in the upper part.
Saint Constantine is depicted with the cross, while Saint Athanasius, patriarch of Alexandria and great Father of the Church (IV century), is depicted with the book of the Scriptures. The composition follows the traditional canons of Byzantine iconography, with a golden background and frontal figures, characterized by intense expressiveness and strong symbolic value.
According to the inscription on the back, the work is attributable to a Greek production of the 18th century. The subject recalls Saint Athanasius’s central role in the fight against Arianism, established by the Council of Nicaea (325), and the figure of Emperor Constantine, essential for the spread of Christianity.
Technique: tempera on panel with a gold ground.
Condition: conditions consistent with the age and devotional use; visible craquelure, wear, abrasions and losses, which attest to the object's authenticity and long history (please refer to the photographs), partially restored.
Dimensions: 29 × 24 cm.
A devotional and collectible work, of notable historical and religious charm, suitable for collectors of icons and Eastern sacred art.
Postal shipping is the most economical method, but not necessarily the most suitable for an artwork of this kind. The icon will be packed with the utmost care, using appropriate protective materials. However, given the antique and delicate nature of the object, it is not possible to exclude micro-movements or slight stresses during transport. A careful evaluation of the photographs before purchase is recommended.
Possible import costs and delays also for Europe.
