Description from the seller
Icon painted on a panel, of Greek-Orthodox origin, depicting Saint John Chrysostom, one of the most important Fathers of the Church.
The saint is depicted frontally, with a long beard and a blessing gesture, in accordance with the traditional standards of Byzantine iconography. The gilded background and the solemn rendering of the figure emphasize the spiritual and devotional character of the work. Saint John Chrysostom, Patriarch of Constantinople, is known for his eloquence and for his central role in Christian theology and liturgy between the 4th and 5th centuries.
According to the cartouche applied to the back, the icon can be attributed to Greek production dating from the 13th to the 14th century. A provenance from a private collection (Mme Paul) is indicated, with the cartouche dated 1967.
Technique: tempera on panel with a gold ground.
Conservation status: conditions consistent with the age and devotional use; there is widespread craquelure, abrasions, wear to the painted surface and the gilded ground, as well as losses and visible restorations. A careful viewing of the photographs is recommended, as they are an integral part of the description.
Dimensions: 27 × 22 cm.
An important object of Oriental sacred art, of great historical and devotional value, intended for collectors of icons and religious art.
Postal shipping is the most economical method, but not necessarily the most suitable for an artwork of this kind. The icon will be packed with the utmost care, using appropriate protective materials. However, given the antique and delicate nature of the object, it is not possible to exclude micro-movements or slight stresses during transport. A careful evaluation of the photographs before purchase is recommended.
Possible import costs and delays also for Europe.
