Description from the seller

Charme – Pende – Democratic Republic of the Congo

Ancient ritual object

We are curators of unusual objects, and it is important not to be mistaken: this Pende charm is an old, authentic, and rare piece, originating from a private Belgian family, kept off the market for many years.

Carved from dense wood, this object features a finely sculpted head with an inward-looking expression, surmounted by a structured headdress with regular incisions. The fusiform body, deliberately streamlined, emphasizes the verticality and the symbolic dimension of the whole. The old, deep, and nuanced patina attests to genuine ritual use, excluding any decorative or later production.

Among the Pende, this type of charm occupied an important place in ritual practices, associated with notions of protection, influence, and mediation. It was a personal or communal object, endowed with a specific function within the framework of traditional rites.

A discreet object, yet imbued with meaning, sought by collectors for the quality of its sculpture, its authenticity, and the coherence of its provenance.
