Description from the seller
Dan masks are major works in the artistic tradition of the Dan people (also known as Yacouba), who live in West Africa, primarily in Ivory Coast and Liberia.
In Dan culture, these masks — called gle or ge — are not mere decorative objects, but incarnations of the forest's spiritual forces: it is believed that invisible spirits become present in the human world when the initiated person who wears them goes into a trance during ritual dances.
Formally, these masks often feature a wooden-carved face with a prominent brow, almond-shaped or round open eyes, a broad nose and full lips—traits that give the expression a force that is both powerful and distinctive. Styles vary according to the Dan subgroups and their ritual functions: some masks are intended for moral education, entertainment, or traditional competitions, while others are linked to rites of peace, war, or initiation.
Recognized from the early 20th century by researchers and European collectors, the Dan mask is considered one of the most emblematic expressions of African art, drawing the attention of museums and major international auction houses like Christie’s where exceptional pieces have reached very high estimates.
