Description from the seller
Hand mask — Lega — Democratic Republic of the Congo
A rare initiatory work, at the heart of Lega aesthetics, intended for discerning collections.
This Lega hand mask belongs to the vast initiatory corpus of Bwami, the wisdom society at the heart of Lega culture. Sculpted with great formal sobriety, it is distinguished by the balance of its volumes, the softness of its lines, and the silent intensity of its expression. The face, deliberately pared down, concentrates attention on the essential: the transmission of knowledge, restraint, self-control. The old patina, deep and nuanced, bears witness to real and prolonged ritual use. These masks, portable or manipulated, accompanied the moral and symbolic teachings transmitted to initiates, each form serving as a support for speech and reflection. Today, masks of this type are especially sought after for their conceptual force, their rarity on the market, and their major place in the history of classical African art.
