Antique mahogany cutlery chest with a sloping hinged lid, six compartments, and fitted with a brass handle on the front and shell inlay on the lid.
This type of object was used in the 18th and 19th centuries for upright storage of table and dessert knives in the dining room or on the buffet.
Upon opening, an interior is revealed with several vertical compartments, specifically designed to store knives separately and securely.
The construction, type of wood, hinges, and design point to a 19th-century European origin from England.

Good antique condition
Normal signs of use and aging, such as light scratches, patina, and discoloration appropriate to the age.
The construction is solid; the hinges are functioning well.
A piece of wood damage has broken off; see the last photo.
