Salt cellar - Hanging - Walnut - Frans antique salt vat

French Provençal antique salt vat from the 19th century. It is entirely made of wood, presumably walnut. It hangs with a hinged lid and a sliding cover. The fine salt goes in the tub, and the coarse salt in the drawer.
The signatory MB points to the owner or the maker.
There are a few cracks right where the nails are. This is a normal sign of aging due to the wood's movement.
Still definitely functional.
The wooden engraving depicts a palm shrub in a pot. The maker managed to beautifully integrate the symbolism of salt and the palm frond, if you know that both were used in rituals to ward off evil.
A very authentic item for the enthusiast.
