Thaïs is a 1917 silent film linked to the Futurist movement, directed by Anton Giulio Bragaglia and Riccardo Cassano.
The beautiful Russian countess Vera Preobrajenska, known as Nitchevo, is active in the literary field under the pseudonym of Thaïs. She neglects Oscar, who loves her madly, to pursue married men, whom she seduces and drags to the brink of ruin. However, she fails to ensnare the Count of San Remo, and for this very reason she invites him into her very strange house adorned with geometric decorations. Thaïs' behavior triggers the jealousy of her friend Bianca, who is in love with the count, who launches into a desperate ride on horseback, as a result of which she finds her death. Thaïs feels responsible for Bianca's end and enters a secret room in her house, which she fills with poisonous gas with the intent of committing suicide. At the last she thinks about it, but the room is now blocked by the railings. Thaïs is no longer able to escape and dies in torment.
Production
Artistic context
With Thaïs Bragaglia he wanted to transpose futurist ideas onto the screen, a movement that considered cinema with interest, as an artistic manifestation based on "machines" [2].
