About the technique: Lambda print
This work was produced as a Lambda print (also called Lambda C-type print or digital C-print), a high-quality photographic printing technique widely used in the contemporary art world for limited editions and museum-quality prints. Lambda is a professional laser-exposure process in which the digital file is directly exposed onto light-sensitive photographic paper, after which it is chemically developed. The result is an exceptionally sharp image with rich, saturated colors, deep blacks, and a subtle color gradient that is unattainable with ordinary inkjet prints.
Lambda prints are known for their archival quality, color stability, and durability. They are chosen by many leading artists and galleries for limited editions due to the superb image quality and the luxurious, matte-glossy finish of the photo paper. This technique places the work in the category of fine art photography and collectors’ prints, with substantially higher valuation than standard reproduction techniques.
About the artist
Alfred Degens (Amsterdam, 1959) is a Dutch pop art artist, educated at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Degens is fascinated by creating worlds that exist only in the imagination. What attracts him to Pop Art — introduced in the 1960s by artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol — is the power of familiar imagery that takes on a new meaning when it is enlarged, isolated, or combined.
His work unites graphic elements in realistic, layered compositions that show human fallibilities with the necessary humor. The paintings and prints are encounters between past and present – from religion to science fiction and every other craze of the day – in an attempt to transcend our mortality. This strong association with Pop Art, combined with elements from the classics and traditional painting methods, recurs frequently in his body of work. Two-dimensionality is consciously embraced; the flatness of existence is elevated into a philosophy.
About the work
In Art for Arts Sake, Degens combines iconic elements from pop culture with a nod to art history. A sensual pin‑up‑like woman in bright blue lingerie is flanked by a classic Bugs Bunny figure from the Looney Tunes world, set against a graphic background that references Mondrian‑like color blocks.
The striking colors – fire red, bright blue, warm yellow and black – and the contrast between a cartoon character, a pin-up, and modernist abstraction create a strong, humorous yet stylish image. The composition brings together different styles from pop culture: cartoon, advertising aesthetics of the fifties and sixties, and clean geometric color fields. This makes the work particularly suitable for a modern, design-oriented interior space or a collection focused on Pop Art and graphic art.
Provenance and condition
The print comes from a private collection, acquired through a gallery in collaboration with Alfred Degens. It is in very good condition. Colors are fresh and bright, with no visible discoloration or fading. No cracks, creases, or wrinkles in the paper; only minimal signs of handling at the edges as is customary with carefully preserved prints. See the photos for your own impression of the condition.
