Tourmaline crystals typically form with trigonal symmetry and often develop well-formed, prismatic crystals with a characteristic striation on the prism faces, which can in rare cases grow several meters long. The crystals have a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5, making them roughly as hard as quartz, with a white streak color. Tourmalines are among minerals with the greatest variety of colors. Depending on their composition, they can be colorless to black or display shades of blue, violet, red, yellow, brown, and green, with zones of different colors sometimes appearing within a single crystal. The colors can vary greatly in intensity depending on the angle of light passing through the crystal (pleochroism).
